Commuter Survey

Purpose

Colorado State University is a signatory to the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment, or ACUPCC. As a signatory, the University has agreed to complete a comprehensive inventory of campus-related greenhouse gas emissions, which includes those from commuting. Commuting is defined as "travel to and from campus on a day to day basis by students, faculty and staff. It does not include student travel to and from campus at the beginning or end of term or during break periods."

Details

The survey was available online from September 11 - 25, 2008. The commuter survey was mentioned in the President's 2008 Fall Address, as well as featured in The Collegian, linked on RamCT, and sent to the entire campus community via email. When the survey closed, 70 randomly-selected participants were awarded a prize.

A public version of the survey has also been made available to help other schools and organizations in developing similar tools.

Results

8,555 members of the campus community took the survey. Approximately 26% of students, 39% of faculty, and 32% of staff responded.

Of all respondents for Fall 2008, 42% reported commuting by personal vehicle (alone), 31% commuted by bike, 11% by walking, 9% by bus, 5% by carpooling, and 2% reported other modes of commuting.
