Landscape Renderings and Concept Images

Our group provides comprehensive operational and physical planning for the University’s 2,300-acre campus. We focus on landscape architecture design and consultation; creation of environmental graphics and signage; regular public interface and outreach; and facilitation of the planning process, including master planning efforts.

Landscape Architecture

Among our daily activities, this equates to creating and developing site planning and landscape design solutions to improve the outdoor environments on campus. Actions include coordinating the development of concepts, policies, and specific plans for the circulation of vehicles, transit, bikes, and pedestrians on campus with a strong commitment to access. We produce landscape design construction documents and specifications to bidding contractors; carry out construction administration for site-related scope on capital construction projects; and provide quality control review of consultant drawings to verify they meet CSU standards and afford safe solutions for our campus community.

Environmental Graphics and Signage

We also delve into the small and big picture logistics of graphics, signage, and wayfinding. This type of work includes generating environmental graphic solutions in consultation with Outdoor Services, Creative Services, Public Relations, and many other campus entities. We develop master planning graphics and documents collaborating with the University Planner, Landscape Architect, University Architects, Project Managers, and various colleges and organizations on campus. We put together graphic presentation materials and planning documents for various Facilities projects and create temporary signage for road, sidewalk, and building construction projects at CSU. Additionally, we create specific signage for a variety of campus audiences, working directly with those clients from the design and planning stages to coordinating with outside fabricators.

Public Interface and Outreach

Moreover, we represent Facilities Management on several formal committees, including the Master Plan Committee, the Physical Development Committee, and the University Public Art Committee; the Parking Services Committee and the Campus Bicycle Advisory Committee; the Pollinator Friendly Campus Committee, Tree Campus USA, and the Committee for Inclusive Physical and Virtual Spaces on Campus, among others. Additionally, our team oversees and implements the memorial donations program to the campus for trees and benches, the Campus Aesthetic Guidelines, and the Exterior Campus Signage Standards, incorporating new signage standards as needed. We steward the Inclusivity Building Standards into our CSU Building Standards, reviewing projects throughout the programming, design, and construction phases. More broadly, we represent CSU in collaboration with the City of Fort Collins Planning and Transportation departments to realize future visions for our city.

Planning Process

We contribute long-term strategic planning and contextual insights to a range of evolving discussions and policies across CSU’s multiple campuses, as well as within our greater community. In this work, we actively demonstrate CSU’s guiding values of civic responsibility, accountability, integrity, and inclusivity. We frequently communicate our intended process and construction plans with both CSU and Fort Collins audiences. We share information with the public and engage in dialogue, answering questions and addressing concerns while supporting solutions that meet several stakeholders’ needs and interests. Outreach efforts comprise a variety of formats such as presentations, campus tours, open house events, social and electronic media, and informal committees.

We believe our successes come from a genuine desire to foster relationships, to deliberately examine contextual and adjacent conditions, to anticipate potential barriers and user needs, and to lead through open listening and collaboration. This allows us to facilitate consensus solutions to complex problems in an intricate and varied institutional environment.
