04 05 00 – COMMON WORK RESULTS FOR MASONRY

A. Design and Workmanship:

1. Masonry work for exterior and interior stonework shall be performed by a prequalified firm having not less than five years successful experience in comparable masonry projects and employing personnel skilled in the masonry processes and operations indicated.

2. Designer shall provide complete Detail Drawings and Specifications to ensure that exterior masonry wall systems are designed to manage moisture penetration from driving rain.

a. Including, but not limited to the interaction of copings, flashings, drainage planes, mortar guard and weeps.

B. Exterior Walls:

1. The use of sandstone and brick on exterior walls of the buildings is preferred.

2. New sandstone and brick additions, alterations and repairs shall match existing building stone and brick as closely as possible.

3. The use of concrete masonry units on exterior walls of buildings is discouraged as the final exposed material

4. Use of split–face and ground face block shall be considered on a Project–by–Project basis with review and approval of Facilities Management (FM) Design Review Committee (DRC).

C. Interior Walls:

1. Concrete masonry units for interior wall partitions may be used when approved by the Project Representative.

D. Material and Standards:

1. The following materials and standards shall be adhered to:

a. Stone/Limestone – Indiana Limestone Institute ASTM C 568

b. Mortar – ASTM C 270

c. Brick – Brick Institute of America (BIA)

d. Concrete Masonry – National Concrete Masonry Association (NCMA)

e. Facing Brick – ASTM C 216, Grade SW, ASTM C 652 Grade SW

f.  Concrete Block – Grade N, Type I, ASTM C 90      

E. Specification:

1. FM DRC shall assist the Architect in specifying masonry material, color, range, distribution, coursing, pattern and detailing to assure adherence to campus aesthetic guidelines.

F. Mockup:

1. FM DRC shall review and approve the construction and detailing of a detailed mockup for all Masonry Work before materials are ordered in bulk.

2. FM DRC shall assist the Contractor in setting the Project standard for masonry distribution, coursing, detailing and workmanship.

3. The mockup shall be protected and maintained on site as a reference of excellence.

4. The use of an in-place mockup shall be approved by the FM DRC through the Project Representative prior to ordering materials for the subject project.

G. Construction Execution:

1. Deliver masonry materials to Project in undamaged condition.

2. Store and handle masonry units to prevent their deterioration or damage due to moisture, temperature changes, contaminants, corrosion, or other causes.

3. During erection of masonry walls, cover tops of walls with plastic sheeting or other waterproof material at end of each day’s Work or whenever else Work is subjected to moisture.

a. Cover partially completed structures when Work is not in progress.

b. Extend cover a minimum of 24” down both sides and hold cover securely in place.

4. Provide bracing designed for all loads which will be encountered during construction as required for temporary support of masonry construction.

a. Bracing shall maintain position and shape of masonry construction during construction and curing of masonry and shall not be removed until construction can support itself under all anticipated construction loading.
