Lactation Rooms

Colorado State University faculty, staff and students who are nursing parents have lactation rooms available for use across Main, Foothills, and South Campuses.

The resource for nursing parents is part of the CSU Commitment to Campus program and is in accordance with the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010 (the Federal Health Care Reform Law). The legislation requires employer to provide nursing parents with reasonable break time to express breast milk following the birth of a child. A room must be provided, be shielded from view, free from intrusion by co-workers and public, and cannot be a bathroom stall. CSU recognizes the importance of supporting parents who wish to continue to breastfeed while they are at work or attending school. The University acknowledges the significant health benefits of breastfeeding and makes private, accessible, and comfortable lactation rooms available to its employees and students who want to express milk while on campus and away from their infant.

There are several designated Lactation Rooms at CSU. Use of these rooms is available for Faculty, Staff, and Students who do not have access to a private office or do not wish to use their office for expressing milk.

Employees and students wishing to use a room should visit the lactation room and check the accommodations and message board prior to their first express visit. Scheduling rooms varies by location. Many of the rooms can be scheduled using the Calendar functions through your University Outlook email account. If you don’t have Outlook available to you, contact the building proctor (https://www.fm.colostate.edu/proctors ) to assist you with scheduling.

Lactation Rooms are designed using CSU Design Standards. Additional information such as the Lactation Room Psychology of Color Guidelines are a good resource in designing these rooms.  Lactation rooms should remain unlocked at all times unless in use. No formal key request is needed. Each Lactation Room has a table, comfortable chair, and locks from the inside showing vacant or occupied status on the exterior of the door. There are message boards available in each room. This board is intended for communication between nursing mothers, the building proctor, and the various women's support groups on campus. Nursing Mothers are responsible for bringing their own equipment and cleaning up after each use.
